As well as ladder stitch, you may also hear this stitch being referred to as an invisible stitch, this is due to the end result being hidden.
Furthermore, a ladder stitch is also commonly used to complete a project that has an open seam. Additionally, this is usually completed after turning or stuffing your project.
To begin this hand stitch, you will simply need:
- Thread matching your fabric
- Hand sewing needle

Prepare needle and thread- Part 1
Once you have gathered your equipment, it is time to begin your ladder stitch.
First, Thread your needle with your chosen thread. Due to this stitch needing a lot of strength, we believe it is better to use double thread (both ends of thread) as you will be required to pull rather firmly at the end of the stitch. Once threaded, tie a double knot at the end of your thread.

Adjust seam allowance- Part 3
Once you have your needle prepared and your project ready, it is time to fold in the seam of the opening inwards. As well as this, it is also very important to fold the seam opening the same amount as the seam allowance, ensuring that it matches the seam allowance of that area.
In our opinion, we believe it is best to press (iron) if possible. As a result, you will find it much easier when sewing.
In addition to this, you can also pin together the opening to keep your fabric in place.

Part 5
Once you have completed your first stitch, next, repeat on the opposite side of the opening. Furthermore, it is very important to keep your thread perpendicular to the seam.

Part 6
Part 7
As well as this, it is important to note that you should NOT be able to see the stitching in your project.
Overall, you can now secure your thread by stitching through one of the existing machine stitches. As well as this, you can also secure your stitch by stitching a know into the seam fabric.
