To begin this hand stitch, you will simply need:

  •  Thread matching your fabric
  • Hand sewing needle

Part 1

Once you have gathered your equipment, it is time to begin your ladder stitch.
First, Thread your needle with your chosen thread. Due to this stitch needing a lot of strength, we believe it is better to use double thread (both ends of thread) as you will be required to pull rather firmly at the end of the stitch. Once threaded, tie a double knot at the end of your thread.

Part 2

Next up on our how to do a ladder stitch for sewing beginners, it is time to prepare your fabric. In order to complete this stich, you will need to have your fabric the correct way round. For example; you want to have the right side facing you.

Part 3

Once you have your needle prepared and your project ready, it is time to fold in the seam of the opening inwards. As well as this, it is very important to fold to seam opening the same amount as the seam allowance, ensuring that it matches the seam allowance of that area.
In our opinion, we believe it is best to press (iron) if possible. As a result, you will find it much easier when sewing.
In addition to this, you can also pin together the opening to keep your fabric in place.

Part 4

After you have prepared the fabric, insert your needle through the last machine stitch.  Next, pull through the stitch and fabric, ensuring that the knot is hidden between the seam. Once you have ensured this is secured and hidden, it is then time to begin the actual ladder stitch.

Part 5

Following on in our guide of how to do a ladder stitch for sewing beginners, it’s now time to do your first stitch. To do this, simply insert the thread through 1 piece of fabric, make a 1/4inch stitch and pull the thread back out the correct side of the fabric.
Once you have completed your first stitch, next, repeat on the opposite side of the opening. Furthermore, it is very important to keep your thread perpendicular to the seam.

Part 6

Continue repeating this stich on either side of the opening whilst also gently pulling closed as you go. Although many people like to pull the thread once the stitching is complete, this could ultimately result in breaking your thread. For this reason, we believe it is best to do this as you complete your ladder stitch.

Part 7

Once your stitching is complete and you have gently pulled the thread through it is now finally time to secure this.
As well as this, it is important to note that you should NOT be able to see the stitching in your project.
Overall, you can now secure your thread by stitching through one of the existing machine stitches. As well as this, you can also secure your stitch by stitching a know into the seam fabric.
