How to do a backstitch. Hand stitching for beginners.

Welcome to our easy, Step by step guide on How to do a backstitch.
Without a doubt, the backstitch is a basic hand stitch that is always good to know. Overall, backstitches are sewn in the opposite direction in which you are sewing.
Not only is the backstitch good as it creates a strong a tight stitch, but it can also be used for a few different purposes.
As well as using the backstitch to hold 2 pieces of fabric together, it can also be used to outline shapes or creating lines.
Furthermore, if this is the first time that you have come across this stitch, it is always a good idea to practice on a scrap piece of paper. Although it may take a little time to pick up, you will soon find it a nice and simple stitch.

How to do a backstitch. Hand stitching tutorial for beginners

In order to begin our guide on How to do a backstitch you will need a hand needle and also some matching thread. However, if you are adding outlines or decoration to your project, you can also you a thread in a different colour.
In addition to this, if you are sewing with felt, it is also recommended that you use a thicker, embroidery thread.

Prepare your needle and fabric-

To begin creating your backstitch, you first need to thread your needle and prepare your fabric. In order to do this, thread your needle and tie a knot at the end. As well as this, you can also use a water soluble fabric pen to help mark out where you want your stitches to be. As a result, you will find it easier to get evenly spaced stitches at the length that you require.

Beginning your stitch- Point A

Once your needle and fabric is prepared it’s time to begin your backstitch. Starting on the wrong side of your fabric, bring your needle up through your fabric. Next, gently pull the thread until the knot is secure on the wrong side of your fabric. (This is point A)

Creating point B

Now that you have completed point A, it is time to move onto point B. In order to do this, bring your needle back down through the front of your fabric, this is now Point B.
Additionally, at this point it is a good idea to double check the stitch length that you would like to produce. On the whole, if you would like smaller stitches, bring your needle back through your fabric closer to Point A. On the other hand, if you would like longer stitches, take your needle back down a little further away from Point A.

Step C-

After you have created your first stitch with point A and point B, bring your needle back through your fabric from the wrong side to make point C.

Take it backwards-

Finally, it’s time to start doing our backstitch. After you have created Point C, it is now time to move back to point B.
In order to do this, take your needle back down at point B. Now that you have created your starting stitch and your first backstitch, it is time to repeat the process using Point B and C. Simply take your needle up to create another Point C and once again, take it back to the previous stitch.
